Scandinavian style in the bedroom

Scandinavian style can be characterized by simplicity and minimalism. The color palette includes shades white and cream, combined with wood. We can also observe some details in natural colors: greens, browns, grays. This style is perfect for the bedroom, where we want to be surrounded by simplicity and calmness. Here are some of my favorite scandinavian style bedrooms:

Happy and sunny yellow rooms

I can’t wait for sunny and warm weather. Missing the spring, I decided to write about how to bring some happiness and brightness to the house. The solution: Yellow! It is a great color to use in interior design. It will definitely bring the feeling of warmth. Personally, I really love the yellow and grey mix, those colors look awesome together! I like to recommend shades of yellow to the rooms which do not get a lot of light.

Here are a few rooms that incorporate yellow. How do you like those sunny, yellow accents?

Ikea + Marriott = Moxy Hotels

Marriott and Ikea are teaming up to create new hotel network: Moxy Hotels. First property will be opened in Milan early next year. Moxy should meed demand from younger, more cost-concerned travelers. Rooms will be sold at about 65-90 euro a night.

The companies want to build around 150 hotels in 10 years, each having 150-300 rooms.  The design presented on the promo video seems to be modern and art oriented.

By the way, did you hear the Ikea Song yet? Its hilarious any quite catchy :)

Be like Jackson Pollock

Jackson Pollock (Paul Jackson Pollock) was a major figure in the abstract impressionism movement and one of the most famous American painters of the 20th century. Altho his early work had an expressive style influenced by Mexican murals, in his thirties he turned his attention towards Surrealism. In 1946 he developed the technique known as “dripping”. The picture surface became for him an area of experimentation for free presentation.

This action-oriented painter influenced many artists and designers. Here are my favorite pictures and products that ware inspired by Pollock’s work.

Custom-made apartments by Zien Home

Originally being from Poland, I’m always so proud when I can observe people from my country being talented and successful. I’m sure that a lot of you still think that Polish apartments are boring and people live in squared, dated buildings from communist times.. Its totally not true! Most of my Polish friends are really interested in interior design and their apartments look like little pieces of art. Since there is a lot of the same looking buildings, especially in big cities, people try to make their homes look unique from inside.

Nowadays, the Polish economy is growing, and more and more Poles are starting to take care of their apartments’ image. The interior design market is growing really fast. A lot of companies and designers decided to create a Home Decor line. One of them, Maciej Zien, famous Polish fashion designer, opened his first Home Decor showroom in 2011. The idea of Zien Home is to create custom made designs that correspond well with the sense of comfort and functionality. I am especially impressed by his custom made wardrobes. Being very concerned with details and quality of fabrics, his pieces are extremely luxurious and unique.

DIY: Clipboards wall decor

I’ve been itching to fill up the empty space above my desk. I like to have a space where I can put my notes, favorite pictures and inspirations, however I’m not a big fan of cork boards. I was searching for an inspiration on-line and I found a very interesting decoration made of clipboards.

Space above my desk before the project:

DIY: dekoracja na ścianę z podkładek z klipsem

To make this wall decor you will need:

  • wrapping paper
  • 6 clipboards
  • 6 wall hooks to hang the clipboards
  • Scotch Restickable Strips
  • Scissors, level

DIY: dekoracja na ścianę z podkłądek z klipsem

Remember to choose a pretty wide wrapping paper, so you can use it as a background for the clipboards.

DIY: dekoracja na ścianę z podkładek z klipsem

Start with measuring the paper that you are going to use for a background. I measured it by adding 2 length of clipboards (25 inches) and 1,5 inch for each space between them (3×1,5).

Using the removable stripes stick the paper to the wall.

Than, you have to nail the hooks. It will be easier if you will put the paper and the clipboards on the floor first and than measure where exactly the hooks should be nailed. It is pretty easy and take couple minutes.

The clipboards are ready to be used as a place for all your inspirations.

Oki Sato

Every year a celebrated international designer is creating a lounge in the entrance to Stockholm Furniture & Light Fair. This year the project was accomplished by Oki Sato, Chief Designer and founder of Nendo Design Studio. Oki Sato has been called the 21st century’s most ingenious designer. He was born in Toronto in 1977, but spent a large part of his life in Tokyo and where he studied architecture. He is now a star in the design world and has worked with Cappellini, Swedese, De Padova, Foscarini and many others.

Nendo-Oki Sato

For Sato, the simplest ideas and the smallest designs create the most unusual experiences. In one of his most famous projects, a roll of pleated paper, often by-products of Issey Miyake clothing, unravels to become Cabbage, a chair that is as beautiful as comfortable.

Another Nendo’s extraordinary project, Hanabi lamp made from shape-memory alloy, opens up like a flower shortly after being turned on; heat from the bulb causes the metal to spread its tendrils. And the inspiration for this design came from a glass of iced tea.

“I was sitting in a cafe by myself, which I usually do on the weekends,” Sato explains, “having a glass of iced tea. The ice started melting, and then it moved and made that sound—do you know what I mean? Like when the ice starts to slide. It made that sound and I started thinking, ‘Couldn’t I design something that would move or change according to a change of temperature?’

“Then I remembered there was a metal, ‘shape-memory alloy,’ and if I could set the alloy’s position according to the temperature of the lightbulb, I could make a lamp that would ‘bloom’ when the lightbulb changed temperature. It was very natural, and it wasn’t inspired from the material itself—the story was there first, and then I found materials that would match the story.” (www.thememagazine.com)

Newsweek magazine named Oki Sato one of the world’s “100 Most Respected Japanese People” in 2006 and honored the firm in 2008 as one of the “Top 200 Small Japanese Companies.” Most recently Sato earned the title of “Designer of the Year” by both Wallpaper* and Elle Decor magazines.

Kitchen inspired by Frida Kahlo

For me, Frida was one of the most important artists of the 20th century. The mix of Mexican folk art and the realism (that she could observe in her husband’s work) allowed her to create seemly naive, but truly powerful and creative pictures. Most of them center on her personal suffering. As a teenager she suffered a severe car accident that led to further complications. Her life was marked by physical and emotional pain.

Frida become an iconic figure amongst feminists and an inspiration to many artists and designers. She is also a great inspiration to me. I like the rich colors, Mexican folk, and the surreal reality. All that elements can be used to create cozy, colorful but also simply and airy kitchen.
